Earthworm UK's 2023 Garden/Woodlot Spread
***********************
Time Frames Indicated:
The following time frames come from years of trial and error testing by Sri Arya, his disciples and students and he says its turned out to be highly reliable. So I'll be using it for the reading.
Numbered Suite Cards:
Cups = Days (typically only when next to Pentacles but occasionally valid when next to other suite cards too but you have to be alert enough to notice it).
Wands = Weeks
Swords = Months
Pentacles = Years
Court Cards and Major Arcana do not follow the above time frame because they are cards of minor (court) and major (arcana) destiny.

The following spread was taken from Sri Arya's book that comes with his Sacred India Tarot deck.
Celtic Cross
Q: What does 2023 look like for Earthworm UK's current work (gardening and woodland)?
Date of Spread: February 1, 2023
*********
I have done an extensive revision of this spread since doing some discursive meditation on it. I think my earlier reading was engaging in the beginner's mistake of making a too-rosy a picture. Of course, I could be making the opposite mistake now - too conservative. Still, I would rather the volunteer be pleasantly surprised than let down. So I revised this spread quite significantly. It's not as rosy as I once thought but it's not to a suffering level either. Rather about what one expects for Long Descent times.
*********
Card 1: The Querent
(the volunteer)
9 of Wands
9 weeks indicated
Sri Arya writes:
"Caution owing to vulnerability. Pre-emptive action. Use of skill and determination. Realization of what is actually valued. The card of unsought and unwanted promotions and responsibilities. Wisdom and strength gained at great cost. Inner resoluteness increases. Drawing on inner reserves of strength and experience. Not afraid to take unpopular decisions. Will manage, will succeed but at high cost. Time to regroup and recoup. Anticipating problems. Controlling oneself from misuse of power. Temptation to swat pests is strong but wrong. Realization that one's path is always going to be lonely. Vigilant and alert attitude required, like mounting guard."
My commentary:
lol. I know he said 'swat pests' but I don't think he meant it literally since the majority of people using his deck are not farmers or gardeners. Most of his disciples are in non-agricultural jobs, I believe. He has a video on Youtube giving a talk to soon-to-graduate IT students.
Although, come to think of it - maybe as a gardener and woodlot manager swatting pests is one of the things that comes with the job? :)
All of the above makes perfect sense given how NATO countries' leadership are busy committing economic suicide - U.S. included. I'd want a card like that turned over for me too considering the way things are at the national/global level these days.
Card 2: What Covers You
(the ambience)
Knight of Cups
My commentary:
This is the card of new interests in life and new opportunities popping up and of following one's dreams and aspirations in the highest sense. For a garden or woodlot - this may even indicate others will show interest in learning what it takes to make both a success.
A good thing to remember is that Knight of Cups upright says the new interests and opportunities will be there if one is open to it. I would say be alert to these two things for 2023. Surprise opportunities may present themselves over the next 11 months. This card portends good fortune in future endeavors.
Card 3: What Crosses You
(obstacles)
10 of Cups
The card of lasting success and happiness. Sri Arya says it means, "Matters arranged and worked out in accordance with one's wishes." and "Optimism and joy. Culmination of long-held and seriously worked out plans. Hopeful and potent healing phase begins."
My commentary:
Edit: I'm revising my original reading. I think now this card in this spot is indicating you will have to really toil to produce your usual amount of veggies and wood. Really it could be indicating either an excess or that you will have a long stretch of higher than typical workload to produce a 10 of Cups bounty.
ouch. I didn't consider that in my earlier write up. Maybe a drought or indeed an invasion of weeds or rabbits, etc. Could go either way - excess or meagre. Apologies that I can't tell immediately which it will be.
This is why I'm still in the Novice stage myself for reading these cards.
Card 4: What is Below You
(the foundation of the situation)
6 of Cups
6 Days indicated if next to a Pentacle card (which it is)
My commentary:
It's possible the 6 days may simply be in reference to one's mindset over the next week.
But I also think it could be an indication one needs to get started within the next 6 days even if that start is only a tiny, token effort (like...literally something as small as digging a token hole in your garden's/woodlot's dirt or whatever it is that gardeners/woodlot managers do this time of the year in the UK. Or simply doing a John Michael Greer-style Druid Grove ritual in both locations. [The Druid Grove Handbook - ISBN: 0979170087 or 978-0979170089] or the [Druidry Handbook: Spiritual Practice Rooted in the Living Earth - ISBN: 1578637465 or 978-1578637461 ]
The point being...if your shakti/prana (Use "the Force, Luke.") is activated in the next 6 days specifically on behalf of the garden and woodlot each themselves then the Foundation for those two places for the year will be set to the 6 of Cups vibrations - which are detailed as follows:
This is the card of nostalgia. Emulating older, traditional lifestyles or philosophies. It's about using one's accumulated memories and traditional skills to achieve great results. It is also the card of seeking wisdom and advice from older generations so this may be signalling encouragement for you in that direction too. Or it could mean that other people will see you as that older generation and come seeking your wisdom and advice. They'll be heartened to actually see someone thriving using tried-and-true methods for successful gardening/woodlot management and be inspired to learn how to do it too. Definitely a pick-me-up in the mood/attitude department a lot of fellow citizens likely would be delighted to see and emulate.
Anyway...this is the card of refresher courses so teaching is also well-indicated as is being the student. If you see courses offered somewhere for traditional skills this card is saying it would be a good use of your time. It's the card of revival of old and ancient ways of doing things. Older contracts specifically (if you have one) also prove useful rather than newer contracts.
On the downside it also signals stubbornness. Because anything not done 'the way things always have been' is dismissed and rejected out of hand. Usually the dismissal is not on legitimate merits but simply because of too-rigid an adherence to tradition.
Card 5: What is Behind You
(past influences that created the present. The influences are weak but still there)
4 of Pentacles
4 years indicated
Sri Arya writes:
"Material stability. Accumulating possessions. Developing and improving what one possesses. Financial gain. Savings and investments."
My commentary:
4 of Pentacles in this spot indicates what is fading away. The number is indicating 4 more years of instability and hardship especially when it comes to any type of financial gains or savings and investments. Any type of lifestyle material gain that relied primarily upon those foundations will likewise recede. It won't be impossible since a weak influence is still there but most people won't realize a large enough amount of such financial gains for them to feel "material stability." Another good reason to continue with your veggie garden and woodlot for at least the next 4 years.
Card 6: What is Above You
(the ideal situation desired)
Page of Pentacles R
To be a resource of knowledge that can be passed on successfully to others so they also can thrive. You are no longer the Page. You already paid your dues and now you are the Sensei...the Grandmaster who has skills that others will find valuable to learn and emulate.
Card 7: What is Before You
(the immediate future that has to be taken care of promptly)
King of Swords R
I admit this one has me a bit stumped since I'm unfamiliar with a lot of the details of the whole situation and those details are likely important. King of Swords is of the highest mental plane and an air tattva (element) card. It's usually indicative of using our highest developed and most subtle plane body-sheath in a wise manner. That's why he's the king, after all. But this is King of Swords R and the spot is saying something needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later.
Furthermore the question is specifically about a garden and woodland plot for all of 2023 and I have zero personal experience with these types of careers or hobbies. My best guess is perhaps it's stressing that it would be wise to take advantage of the 6 day window indicated earlier to set the 2023 vibrations for those two places to a beneficial ambience? I apologize for being stumped on this issue. Perhaps it can inspire you to look around and see if anything comes to mind that would benefit from taking action within the next few days?
Card 8: Personality
(What to do and how you should behave so you can achieve what's desired. Negative cards are warnings to get your action plans in order).
3 of Wands R
3 weeks indicated
As Sri Arya says, since this is an R card you need get your plans in order or revise them.
Yet another edit: This card R could ALSO be indicating that you will be in a complacency or non-creative phase for the next 3 weeks. Possibly also due to King of Swords R likewise being in detriment and not really having a good idea of how to go about manifesting your plans.
I'm beginning to get a sense for why reading these cards is not as easy as I once thought. If your creativity is in detriment see if you can at least take one concrete step within the next 6 days that you find genuinely inspiring. Try not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. If your creativity is in detriment I'm thinking this card says after 3 weeks you'll start getting more ideas. In fact, it's possible the better ideas that pan out long term may be the ones that come AFTER the 3 weeks R is over.
But don't take my earlier pronouncements as gospel - whether good or not-so. The overall cards are saying you will succeed though it will take time and effort.
Double edit: I just re-read Sri Arya's entry for this card R. He says it's a warning to not get too complacent or arrogant because of early success.
"Complacency and arrogance due to early success. It indicates a possibility of getting addicted to euphoria and taking increasingly dangerous risks to regain it. Along with it comes a lack of perspective, self-delusion and losing one's nerve due to unwelcome news. Also indicated is unrealistic planning and an inability to compromise and an inability to take contrary advice (My note: maybe because of 6 of Cups being in play? Tradition wants only what's traditional so tends to be stubborn). No group synergy and time wasted. Promising leads and ventures deflate. Outright failure and defeat."
My commentary:
If you take on students expect some to flake out and some projects to fizzle out and some of your projects or teacher workshops will not pan out at all - in particular due to the groups themselves not being in synergy. You'll have to go through the school of hard knocks to find out which projects are a success and which ones fizzle out. There is also the possibility no one will actually be interested in learning any of this or if they find out how hard the work is they drift away.
If so, do not become complacent even though the cards indicate the underlying danger for it is lurking there. Expect after the initial wave of success for harder phases - potentially a LOT HARDER. You'll have to develop staying power for the leaner times and avoid self-doubt and self-blame. Probably ditto for your actual garden and woodlot. Early success possibly followed by more than usual workload (maybe because of more weeds, invasive animals eating your veggies or a surprise drought - just a guess)?
So in other words...it's just life being life. Also don't be taken in by early success. Especially for the garden and woodlot itself.
I'm going to keep this on the garden and woodlot itself:
Expect to be "fooled" by the early success then hit a long stretch where something fizzles out. Don't despair. Expect it and keep going. Just revise as sensibly as you can.
Triple Edit: Removing the bit about health and influx of money. That is only for when 3 of Wands turns over upright. This one turned over Reversed. So no sudden influx of money. Health of the garden and/or woodlot may also be in question. Early success, followed by some kind of problem. Best guess would be maybe excess weeds, animal invasion or surprise stretch of drought.
Card 9: How Other's View You
(how people perceive you in this situation? What can you expect from those around you? Do people share your goals? Do they believe these are good for you?)
I'll just transcribe what Sri Arya himself said about this card. And remember...this is how other people will view you.
4 of Wands
"A very positive card. Auspicious and propitious. Feelings of joy and celebration. Purchasing or building a house. Moving to a new house or city. Just karmic rewards or harvest. Increased self-esteem. Relax and wait, as success is there. Ethical imperatives. Discriminatory powers of mind. The card of the builder and decorator so well dignified for them. Harmony at home and work. Foundation for future growth and progress, so pay attention to this time and utilize it effectively. Second home, or weekend/holiday home. Rest and relaxation. Favorable interventions by senior or powerful people. Attendance at social events. Important anniversaries in life. Coming of age. Being recognized at or valued at true stature."
older read: You can be sure if people are seeing this in YOU in an age of economic uncertainty and instability they'll definitely be wanting some of that mojo for themselves. So again, I think this spread is indicating the environment is ripe for teaching, not just for teaching gardening and woodlot management but for your other skills as well.
newer read: I think this will be for the longer term - as in...it may take all 4 years for that opinion others have of you to be manifest.
Card 10: Hopes and Fears
(how people subconsciously set themselves up to succeed or fail)
9 of Cups
9 Days indicated.
This card is known in the tarot community as the "Wish Fulfillment" card. You will make all your wishes come true. This is the mind of a Master Mage. If you work hard to manifest what you want this card says you will definitely achieve it. It's not next to a Pentacles but nonetheless I believe something about you beginning to manifest your wishes will happen within the next 9 days in addition to the 6 days already being indicated.
If you act within the next 6 days for your garden and woodlot you will also set the tone for those locations for the entire year. Still...to hone your self-observation skills be watching over the next 9 days for other actions you are taking to manifest your dreams. Then check back in December and see if you can spot what this card was pointing out that turned out to be particularly good for your plans.
This card is signalling you have what it takes to succeed. You won't be subconsciously or unconsciously engaging in self-sabotage. :D
It's the one card in the spread I do not make any significant revisions about. This one I still standby - over the longer term this card is saying you will manifest what you want though the road getting there may take a lot more effort than initially thought.
Card 11: Final result
The Hierophant R
This card is indicating you will be breaking with tradition in some way with your garden and/or woodlot. My first guess is this is in reference to your whole attitude for the coming year. Where before gardening and tending a woodlot may have mostly been for joy and hobbyist interest you are now also realizing it's a great way to 'Collapse Now and Avoid the Rush' as John Michael Greer puts it.
The other way is that Hierophant R may be in reference to the local populace willing to break away from the 'grocery-store' shopping mentality and dipping their toes into some kind of self-sufficiency. My guess is also that people simply seeing others reviving and restoring old ways of living and proving they still work will spark interest in replicating it for themselves.
I'm inclined to think that for you, overall, whatever you invest your time in will pay off over the longer term though possibly not as much as you'd wish for 2023.
Though I am uncertain upon reflection for your garden - 10 of Cups could mean too much bounty and you'll have trouble disposing of it all or equally that the garden will fail to produce to its usual standard in some way. Either way, don't get dispirited because the longer term read I think is still good though the immediate term may be less than rosy as my first interpretation said.
You will be doing exactly what John Michael Greer keeps advocating for over and over - become the kind of person who provides skills and goods a local populace actually want and need. A lot of fellow citizens will be heartened to see someone else thriving despite uncertain times and want to pick up those abilities for themselves. This is how the world is going to "Muddle Through" the Long Descent and a good many will even do it in style (as JMG often says in ages of decline - the working class gets a MUCH better deal as wealth inequality fades away).
Time Frames Indicated:
The following time frames come from years of trial and error testing by Sri Arya, his disciples and students and he says its turned out to be highly reliable. So I'll be using it for the reading.
