Female Questioner: You spoke about a Tantric who used to drink quite a bit of alcohol and nothing happened to him. Is it he who really consumes alcohol or is it the Goddess that he worshipped and did Pujas for? How is it that he's able to consume that much alcohol (750 ml minimum per earlier transcript) and nothing happens to him? And there are many Tantrics who take all kinds of hallucinogenics and drugs and nothing happens to them and there are lots of people who try to emulate them and they get into a lot of trouble.

Sadhguru A:

Those (laughs) who are taking enormous concern for their wellbeing always having some problem going for themselves. One fundamental thing about this is....(pauses)....

The more concern is coming...(pauses)...this excess concern about yourself is coming because you have a clear idea "this is me" (slaps thighs). (Sadhguru closes his eyes)....If you sit here and breath you understand...or you begin to not understand...now you don't know which is you and which is me. You don't know what is me and what is not me. Because the air that you breath is vital for your existence. But you cannot hold a certain amount of air in your lungs and say, "this is my air".

The same is true with the very flesh and bone in your body but it takes little more to understand that...I'll have to take you to the toilet...so let me not do that. Just breathing you know what is you this moment is not you the next moment. It's all the time happening and respiration is not just through your nostrils. Through every pore in the skin. Not perspiration, respiration is happening. (taps his chest)

So the respiratory process itself, we use that as a base, is showing you what you believe is me this moment, next moment is not you. What you thought is not you, the next moment it's you.

So if this becomes a much deeper experiential reality for you. Or devotion to a particular Deity, particularly the feminine forms is this: to create an entity other than you...which you begin to experience as a part of yourself. So you don't distinguish between what is this (motions to himself) and what is this (motions away from self). If you...if your identity is slowly cultured like this suddenly there is a phenomenal capability because that form is created in a certain way and..uh...doesn't have a physical form but an energy form. So the physical issues that you have...he or she doesn't have (referring to the Tantric from the original question).

So, devotion is a kind of Tantra. It must be understood. Largely, almost always, not neccessarily, it is not true in southern India but largely in the rest of the country Tantrics are always worshipers of Goddess. Generally Kali or Bhairavi or other forms, Durga and other things but...uh...there is a very powerful tantric element to Chamundi. Chamundi...Chamu is gone probably (laughs) I am sure she is there but...Chamundi is a very powerful tantric temple created and built for the well-being of the maharaja. Maharajas never stepped out to do anything important without seeking the blessings of Chamundi. Without that nothing ever happened and when every other kingdom in the country was ravaged either by Islamic forces or by the British...Mysore remained untouched. Right next door Srirangapatna is Tipu Sultan. He ravaged the whole of South India but he could not touch Mysore nor did the British touch Mysore. Of course they made a deal but deal or no deal, almost every kingdom got ravaged but this one place protected. Always the maharajas believed it's because of Chamundi that neither the Islamic forces nor the British ever their soldiers stepped into Mysore kingdom and it remained pretty and nice. Their palaces, their gardens and everything and all the people worshipped the maharaja because of this. That when every part of the country was going through strife Mysore alone remained free of strife. Completely free of strife.

So this Bhags (pronounced as Bugs) or Bhagat Singh's father was a military man and he had supply of army canteen rum or other people brought it because most of his friends were retired army personnel. Whenever they came they always came with this and that became his tradition and fine but it's not neccessary for one to....(stops for a moment)....It's nothing to do with this tantra. He likes to drink and people will drink and it has no effect on him. That's because you're 2-bodied. You will see many times...don't go out and try this today because (laughs) I'm not talking about the kind of "I love you, you love me" stuff that's happening in the world today. When people really get connected...(pauses) when 2 individuals, not a deity and a human being, just 2 individuals suddenly you will see there is a certain enormous capability in them simply because energy-wise they are connected.

It rarely happens. I have witness just a couple of situations like that in my life where energy-wise people are connected and suddenly you find they're hugely empowered. Just another human being with the same problems that you have but if get connected like this with a powerful deity - if your sense of physical boundaries are removed because of your devotion or your practice or your...whatever ritual that you perform - if you have removed that boundary, largely, now you are 2-bodied. One is your own with your own energies another is a powerful form. So this will so empower you that unfortunately somebody wastes it drinking and proving I can drink it as much as I want and nothing happens to me. But this could be used in so many phenomenal ways. In ways that are useful for your own growth and everybody's wellbeing. So we uh...the idea of putting Brahmacharis for a period of 14 to 15 days in the Dhyanalinga (temple) is that they develop that kind of relationship so they're hugely empowered just by the presence. And the same thing goes for the Devi (temple) that we want the same people to be there - hoping one day they will not be limited to just the boundaries of their physical bodies. They're really...uh...they're embodiment of both at the same time. Everything about them will change.

I think I've spoken about this before. There was a lady called..uh...not right to call a lady, she was not a lady...a woman. (Sadhguru laughs) Called Mayamma, who became famous in Tamil Nadu. A whole lot of stories about her and uh...I will not go into that detail. You can find out about her by reading about her.

After she left her body, maybe about four years after that or something I was staying in a close-by hill called Yercaud. At that time my girl, Radhe was just about 6-7 years of age. She'd ...I'd just brought her for a short holiday from the school so we just want to stay somewhere and then drop her back to the school after a few days. So then I came to know...(pauses)... it was a full moon night and then I knew they had some little...something happening at Mayamma's samadhi. Where she left her body they built a small place for her.

[video cuts to show a small but beautiful shrine then begins panning the inside. It is filled with candles, a diverse array of fresh flowers everywhere - roses, carnations, flower petals everywhere, alters, etc]

All concrete stuff, not even stone or properly done. So we just went there and it's just a small, little 2 bedroom house, a regular house in a locality. Not some kind of a temple.

[video cuts to a room holding a large sepia-toned photo of an older woman on a cloth-draped alter with flowers on top]

So there's her picture. Her weather-beaten...you know, her face is so weather-beaten and just her face's picture. And I just walked into this little room and while I sensed...(laughs)...you know she was of a certain quality, I really liked that, I'd never really been there before. So we just sat down and this girl who was just 7 years of age, she just sat there and she wouldn't get up for more than an hour, she just closed her eyes and she wouldn't open her eyes.

Then..that day was not the full moon day, it was the next day. So the next day evening they invited us, "Full moon day, please come. We'll have a dinner and things". So again we came down for full-moon day evening and some...I think 12-15 people, I don't remember the exact number...that many people...not even that many...I think about 4-5 people have assembled for the full-moon day celebrations of Mayamma. (Laughs) I thought this is horrible because her Samadhi is like pulsating. Just a cement Samadhi (shrine). Not the way to build it if they wanted to preserve it for long time but it was 4 years after she died and it was phenomenally powerful and they made puzhi saatham, just lemon rice, just one item as dinner. Not a very rich place. They cooked for some maybe 25-30 people but only 3-4 people turned up including us or maybe apart from us. I thought even to eat the free puzhi satham (alt spelling: puli sadam) people are not turning up.

Such a powerful being but she never really spoke and...(pauses)...no marketing staff and stuff but the thing is if ....let's say there's a dead animal in the forest, if something died, all the creatures who nourish themselves from the meat of this animal will immediately know. I think for those of you in America have spoken a lot about Mr. Racoon. (Sadhguru laughs) I just put out a plant with some tuberous substance in its base. I put it out. Now after what, I'm going to the house after 4 months and I put out this plant outside, within 20 minutes he's come and had his snack of my plant.

I'm saying anything that nourishes them if.. if it is out there, all the other creatures know. Human beings have to be advertised, otherwise they won't know. They've lost their ability to smell out where is there wellbeing. The place is reverberating in such a powerful way...free puzhi satham but nobody turns up.

[Video cuts to show a sepia-toned snapshot of Mayamma with a gentleman - one of her devotees - both under an umbrella in the rain]

The incredible thing of this place is a devotee of hers...a simple man. He's a Tamil man. Mayamma is from Nepali kind of origin. She never spoke so nobody knew but looking at her face she could have been a Nepali or most probably a Nepali. I think she is a Nepali. This is a Tamil man who lived in absolute devotion to her and you look at his face and it's just about the same as hers. It's a man and just about the same face. He's become like that. It's just his involvement with her his face has just changed everything and he's become like that.

Today modern scientists are beginning to admit if you do the right things with people the fundamentals of human genetics can be altered. The very way you look. The very way your physical structure is, the very way you think and feel and experience life can be altered if necessary work is done from childhood. Yes it's easier if it's done at childhood but not necessarily so. We have seen many people here with a single initiation the shape of their face and eyes and everything changes just like that. Because genetics is not a permanent influence.

All these karmas and kriyas that we are doing for the dead is mainly to distance yourself from the genetic source. It is the genetic source which fixes the boundary of your body as if it's a...it's a divine line. It is not. It is...this line...the physical line of the body or the boundaries of the body are essentially fixed by how deeply you are identified with the genetic source.

I know it is...(pauses) in various other cultures in the world, even when people take monkhood they refer to each others as brothers. That's one thing that is never allowed in India. Or unfortunately it's seeped into northern India. Corruption always enters northern India first and then peculates down south for various reasons. They have started referring to themselves as Gurubhai. Brotherhood is out in spiritual process because brotherhood means you're claiming common genetics again. No question of being a brother. No question of being a sister because the moment you identify yourself like that again you'll form....(pauses)

You need to understand this...you need not have been born together. If 2 people identify each other too much then you will see they will make a genetic contact and this called as Runanubandha. That is why the yogic system always says you always sit alone, never touching anybody. Not any kind of thing because in moments when of transparence if you touch somebody you will gather a genetic relationship. So we don't want a genetic relationship with anybody because it establishes the boundary of the body firmly.

So a devotee means he's identifying with a non-physical form. Wants to establish a relationship with a non-physical form in such a way that the boundaries drawn by the genetic material of the physical body is broken away. And once this is breach, the physical boundary is breached, all the capabilities that are enshrined into that deity becomes available to you.

Unfortunately Bhagat Singh's father - it's not for me to judge - fortunate or unfortunate - whichever way - but impressing people with drink is not the best way to make use of that. Obviously he made some connection. It could have been used in so many different ways but that's the way he did it. It's not for me to judge whether it's right or wrong but there are more sophisticated ways of using it. Drink and various other things that they do in the name of tantra are rudimentary ways of using it. There are more sophisticated ways of using it which could be...(pauses)...greatly enhance the individual's growth and benefit everybody else around.

So, I've think I've spoken about this great grandmother doing tantra with the ants. The ants eat, she's nourished. She really felt full and nourished. This is so....(pauses)....I have seen people...(pauses) I think the Japanese have done a lot in this direction. They do this with the plants. Deeply engrossed in gardening, deeply engrossed in making of a plant's life.

[video cuts to a watercolor painting of a Japanese woman in kimono watering a bonsai tree on by a sunny window]

That if the plant is nourished, you feel nourished. And this is the experience of many devotees if they do their pooja and offer prasadhana to their deity, they're nourished.

You will see a whole lot of devotees barely eat and they're still fine because they're deeply, deeply engrossed in that and the physical boundaries of the body are breached and nourishment happens in different ways. It need not always happen with ingestion. Only when physical boundaries are important, either because of your ignorance or because of the things that you've chosen to do in your life you may establish the physical boundaries strong.

With the spiritual process we are always trying to breach the physical boundaries but once someone reaches a certain stage of possibility where keeping the body becomes a challenge, now you're always trying to peg the body within the boundaries because now the challenge is to keep it, hold it. The challenge is not to breach it. So devotion is this - they're only trying to breach it and there are processes.

Devotion is not just about emotion. Emotion is supported by the right kind of processes which will take away those pins with demarc the map of your body and allows you to transact with something else. If you could transact with everything it's great. It's a romantic idea but usually it doesn't happen it takes something else to do that. So it's best that you choose a higher identity than yourself and try to transact with that. Breach your boundaries with just that one entity. This is what a whole lot of Tantrics are doing.

At one time when I was confused about a everything in the universe, including myself. I went looking for them and it's amazing how many of them exist in this country. I'm sure their numbers have dwindled dramatically in the last 25-30 years. And people who just with one picture of one goddess sitting in some little hut, you just go there just at that time when they do the worship they'll sit down - 10 people will arrive - whatever you want to know about your life, just like that, simply they will say it. Only at that time.

After that they will not be the same. At that moment when they breach the limitations of their body suddenly who they are is so greatly enhanced. Suddenly they have a vision which they don't have in normal times.

[my note: I understand better now what shamans in various tribes and cultures around the world were doing. It was almost certainly some version of precisely this Tantric process Sadhguru describes.]

You will see any number of such little, little temples in India where there are such people. But people say, "a goddess has come upon him!". That's what they say, where he will freak a little bit, then suddenly start saying things which he himself would be normally incapable of doing.

This is serious enhancement of competence. Someday you must do that with me. Or if you find me unattractive you can do it with Dyanalinga. Devi is easier but she's not of the same level of competence of as Dyanalinga but she's good enough.

[Video ends with Sadhguru singing slow, sonorous song in honor of the Divine Feminine:
Mahadevi
Yogi-shwari
(inaudible apologies)
Linga-Bhairavi....]
