Info from Isha Foundation on how to wear, care for and re-charge a Rudraksha every 6 months:

***************Instructions from Isha Foundation**************

What is Rudraksha Diksha?

Sadhguru wishes that everyone should be able to access the grace of Adiyogi wherever they may be. One way to be in the grace of Adiyogi is to receive Rudraksha Diksha, a powerful way of becoming more conscious and be available to Grace using the items included. Rudraksha Diksha is a chance to soak your body, mind and energy in Shiva’s tears of ecstasy!

What are the different items in my Rudraksha Diksha package?

The Rudraksha Diksha package is a specially designed set of items to be a powerful instrument to access the grace of Adiyogi.

Rudraksha - consecrated by Sadhguru during Mahashivratri

Thread to wear Rudraksha around the neck.

Abhaya Sutra - specially consecrated thread that is tied around one’s wrist.

Vibhuti - sacred ash which enhances one’s receptivity.

Adiyogi Image - A powerful tool to make one available for the grace of Adiyogi Read more details about these offerings in the below listed sections.

I am not sure which thread is what in the Rudraksha Diksha package and what to do with them?

In the Rudraksha Diksha package, there are 2 different threads:

The shorter thread should be used to string the Rudraksha so as to wear it around your neck.

The longer one is Abhaya Sutra, a consecrated thread to remove doubt and fear. It has to be tied around the wrist, women on their left wrist and men on their right wrist. The Abhaya Sutra should be worn for at least one mandala (48 days) and will generally be effective for three to four months. It can be worn along with your watch or other jewelry.

How to untie Abhaya Sutra after 48 days?

To remove/untie Abhaya Sutra, you can either untie the Abhaya Sutra or burn it open. The Abhaya Sutra should never be cut.

You can dispose of the sutra in one of the following ways:

Tie it on the branch of a flowering or fruit bearing tree.

Bury it under a tree or plant, where the soil is wet.

Burn it and smear the ashes from your Vishuddhi chakra (pit of the throat) down to the Anahata chakra (just below the sternum/solar plexus).

Do I have to condition the Rudraksha as soon as I receive it?

There is no need to condition the Rudraksha when you receive it as it is already conditioned. You can condition it every 6 months by keeping the Rudraksha in ghee for 24 hours, and in milk for the next 24 hours. Then rinse with fresh water and wear.

Read more about Rudrakshas and their significance and their maintenance in the Rudraksha section of this page.

Can I wear Rudraksha along with my previously worn Rudraksha and how to take care of it? Do I have to do pooja before wearing it?

There are no conditions as such. Rudraksha can be worn with other Rudraksha around your neck. There is no need to follow any ritual before wearing it as it is already consecrated through the process of prana pratishtha.

How should I wear my Rudraksha?

Rudraksha should be worn around the neck by stringing it with a thread made of pure undyed cotton or raw silk. It can also be worn with copper, silver, or gold chain, but make sure not to cup the Rudraksha or tie the wire tightly as it might damage or cause the Rudraksha to crack. Thread to wear Rudraksha is included in your Rudraksha Diksha package.

Can I wear my Rudraksha as soon as I receive the package? What is the Sadhana mentioned on the package?

As part of this offering, Sadhguru offered an initiation process for Rudraksha Diksha. Please go through the instructions and the process here >

I already wear Rudraksha Mala / Gowrishankar Rudraksha. Can I still wear this Rudraksha?

Yes, you can. You can wear this along with other Rudraksha.

What is the difference between the Rudraksha we received in previous Mahashivratris and what we will receive this year?

Rudrakshas in previous years had adorned Adiyogi for a certain period of time.

Rudraksha that are being sent as a part of Rudraksha Diksha are specially consecrated by Sadhguru on the night of Mahashivratri.
